Luke Hayman on Great Magazine Design.

Luke has been a partner at Pentagram, a multidisciplinary design firm, for almost a decade now. In this interview Luke emphasises the need for intrinsic design when it comes to designing for print and establishing your own style. Also the importance of font and how designers, especially amateur, can naturally steer towards newer fonts due to their unusual or different look. While in some cases this can certainly be beneficial it is still incredibly important to match your font style to feel of your magazine. For example the use of Comic Sans in a newspaper or journal article would break the stasis of the piece and distract the reader.

Luke makes an interesting point near the end of this, that you shouldn’t force design or changes things merely for the sake of change. That variations in design should evolve naturally to suit your reader and, indeed, your label.
